The Family Behind Bell Sharps
I am Kaity Sevits. I am married to my one true love, Jake, and we have two handsome young boys, Hartley and Wade on a small farm that is perfect for raising boys and Aussies. My mother-in-law, of Ironwood Ridge Kennels, formerly JJ Ranch, is who introduced me to the Australian Shepherd breed many years ago. Back when I was a young, wild and free cowgirl, I hauled my horses to where I would call my next 4 years home while I attended Truman State University (I never had a single inclination at the time that this is where I would call home up until this point in my life!). I unloaded my two ponies and turned them out in the rolling pastures of the JJ Ranch and was greeted by a spunky, wide-eyed blue bi female Aussie named Banjo. She would become my very first Australian Shepherd. This Aussie was everything a young woman, jumping head first in the real world, needed in her life. She was my ever-loyal protector, my best friend, trail boss, back seat driver, wine drinking buddy, etc. She even would go to the local bar with me (remember, this was my wild years!). I have so many memories wrapped up in the 16 years with that dog. She was what solidified my passion for the breed. She was a true Aussie and I’ll never forget her and how she served me in that time of my life.
Fast forward to October 18, 2014 - my wedding day. I was gifted a black tri Aussie puppy by my mother in law. The next morning, she was using my filthy wedding dress as a bed. She’s been running this show and keeping us all in line ever since. I’ve added a few more to my pack since then. I’ve dedicated much of the last decade to studying the breed, getting involved in multiple venues of dog sports and learning all I can. My boys are instrumental parts of my breeding program when it comes to raising our puppies. They are master puppy socializers and they don’t have to do much other than exist… They are loud, fast, unpreditable at times, usually smell funny, bringing random things/beings into the house. I always joke that I’ll have to adopt some ornery boys when my two are grown and doing their own things, and hopefully they’ll have an Aussie by their side.
Beyond my Aussies, my life is very much so dedicated to caring for dogs. I own a dog training, grooming and daycare facility. I have been a pet groomer since 2015 and was self taught using my mother in law’s Wheaten Terriers as my test subject. I am an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and teach a variety of classes throughout the year including AKC S.T.A.R Puppy, Canine Good Citizen Prep, Agility Foundations, Rally and a variety of obedience classes.
My husband is also an entrepreneur. He once was a mechanical engineer but like we do around here, we get wild ideas and believe that life is too short to not chase after them. He opened a Jiu Jitsu gym on the other side of my training facility in 2020. While the business isn’t as lucrative as his comfy engineering career, he is a truly happier person helping other people grow physically and mentally tougher, while also choking them out. Kidding… but really, I am not. His children’s program is extremely popular so here is my plug to introduce your kids to Jiu Jitsu if they’re not the music or dance kind of kid… You may be surprised at the self-confidence and resilicency this sports builds in our kiddos.
Besides running our small businesses, we stay busy spending time with the boys & our dogs by hiking, camping, boating, kayaking, fishing and generally being outside as much as we can. (No, my house is never clean.) Weekends are for Jiu Jitsu tournaments and dog shows. Now you can see why Aussies are the breed for us - they’re up for anything and everything, even if it’s nothing.
